Education: Causes of Success and Failure

Most people in today’s society would say that education plays an important role in one’s life. A well-pursued education is crucial for someone to live a somewhat comfortable lifestyle. It is known that people who drop out of school or do not excel in the learning process are likely to have more financial difficulties than people who are well educated. The teachers, as well as the parents, teach children the basics of education. If a child is not disciplined and guided during his first couple of years of life, the child’s outlook on education could be affected. That said, the importance of education varies from person to person, as well as the different age groups.

When children are in grade school, education is taken lightly. When they are doing homework, they probably do not even know why they are doing it; they just know that they have to. John Gatto once said, “Bells destroy the past and the future, rendering the same as any other,” meaning children could care less about what happened in the past hour of class; all they know is that it is over. If always pushed and told to do one’s homework, the child will eventually realize the homework’s importance. Discipline is one of the most effective ways to get the child to understand the importance of education.

The parents are role models, as well as the main source of guidance for the child. Parents are the ones that need to get their child to do the homework, make sure they are studying, and prepare them for the tests. If a child does not have an authority figure telling him what to do and how to do it, he will fail. Failure can have two possible effects on the child. The first one is that the parent will not care and tell the child he is smart, regardless of a test, resulting in a child that lacks ambition. If the child gets support, regardless of what he has made, he will think that he doesn’t have to try as hard next time. As John Gatto says, “The lesson of report cards, grades, and tests is that children should not trust themselves or their parents but should instead rely on the evaluation of certified officials." This is very true. The child needs a sense of reality and has to realize that you have to work hard to achieve maximum learning potential. The second possible effect is that the parents push the child harder and make him realize that superior results require hard work. Once children begin to understand the importance of the learning process, they take education to a more important level. They start to understand how education will help them succeed in whatever they want to do. Unfortunately, there are children with parents who do not care, and so they never understand the importance of an education. As stated above, parents are role models, and if a child grows up and never gets pushed and just acknowledges that working is the way to make money, that is what they will do. Most will then drop out of school and begin to work full time at a job that requires little education.

The environment at school is a main source of development for children. It is known that schools in bad neighborhoods have a low cumulative grade point average. The environment that kids grow up in is brought to the school and into the classroom, making the teachers work harder and become more stressed out when no improvement is seen. A domino effect is occurring in these types of situations. The children do not care, which results in bad grades. Then the teachers get frustrated trying to teach, and they finally give up on them. If the child goes to a well-respected school and is in an environment where excelling is the only way to get ahead, then that is what he will do.

The teachers and parents are the most important influences on their child’s educational outlook. If taught in a disciplined environment, the child will not have to struggle throughout life. A child will be a better person if they are praised for their good work and disciplined when they do something wrong. Along with discipline, a child needs support from both the parents and teachers. The combination of discipline and support will help the child realize the full importance of an education. Too many people blame the children for society’s problems, but the real cause is a lack of good parenting and education.
